But complacency really can be dangerous – especially when it comes to smoke extract fans.

The ‘out of sight, out of mind’ nature of emergency smoke extract fans means many are going years without being serviced. While I hate to instigate the pressing of the panic button, this worrying trend could have catastrophic consequences.

Some building owners carry the misplaced assumption that they won’t encounter a fire, which of course is a stance we only see the consequences of once it’s too late.

Arguably the problem stems from the legislation in place. Although BS EN 12101-3 ensures emergency smoke extract fans are rigorously tested during manufacture and pre-sales, it is much less clear what needs to happen once these products are installed. In actual fact, there is no mandatory requirement for these fans to be serviced.

When it comes to frequently-used, well-populated commercial buildings such as supermarkets and shopping centres, smoke extract fans are vital in the event of a fire. Not only do they help occupants to get out, they also assist the fire service in getting into the building. After all, ultimately, these fans are there to protect lives.

What should be done?

After 20,000 hours or five years of service, the fans bearings should be changed by the approved manufacturer of the equipment. If there is a fire and the fan hasn’t been used regularly, hasn’t been serviced, and has bearings which are in poor condition, there is every chance it will fail just when it is needed most.

What we really need is a mandatory servicing requirement to ensure that legally, building owners and facilities managers are not allowed to forget to have these critical appliances checked on a regular basis.

Elta SmokeVent Extraction for ‘The Best Public Library in the World’ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-fans-smokevent-extraction-for-the-best-public-library-in-the-world/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-fans-smokevent-extraction-for-the-best-public-library-in-the-world/#respond Thu, 12 Dec 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/elta-fans-smokevent-extraction-for-the-best-public-library-in-the-world/ Elta, the Kingswinford-based manufacturer, has supplied five smoke extraction units for the £189m ‘Library of Birmingham’. The brief from Birmingham City Council in constructing the new facility was simply: “30,000m2 and the best public library in the world.”

The new library is said to be the largest public library in the United Kingdom – one of the largest in the world – and the largest public cultural space in Europe. It is naturally viewed by Birmingham City Council as a flagship project for the city’s current redevelopment.

Everyday or emergency operation

Cofely District Energy were appointed by Birmingham City Council to undertake the construction of the energy centre which serves both the library and the adjacent Birmingham Repertory Theatre to which the library connects and with which it shares some facilities. As part of this energy centre project, Environmental Climate Systems won the contract to supply and install smoke ventilation systems, including fire rated ductwork and louvers, selecting smoke extract fans from Elta: two SmokeVent SLCS 560 and three larger SLCS 630 extraction units. The fans are robust and durable axial units of heavy-duty construction, part of a range that has been specifically developed to operate as the extract part of the main ventilation system or for emergency clearance of hazardous smoke or fume conditions. They are capable of running in either normal mode or in a once only smoke operation at 300°C for a duration of two hours, making them a cost effective means of providing both everyday ventilation and emergency smoke clearance from the same unit.

An exciting showcase for the city’s impressive collections

The new main central public library in Birmingham is home to a collection of more than one million books and is situated on the west side of the city centre at Centenary Square. It stands between Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Baskerville House, previously called the Civic Centre and formerly offices for parts of Birmingham City Council. It has more than 200 public access computers, an exhibition gallery, music rooms, a studio theatre and a recording studio. It replaces the former Birmingham Central Library.

Facilitating safe evacuation in an emergency

Elta’s SmokeVent SLCS fans have adjustable pitch aerofoil section impeller blades made from high quality die cast aluminium. These are positively locked by pinning to provide added security for operation in dense smoke. The highly efficient impellers make SmokeVent units a very economical way of moving large volumes of air at low to medium pressures. By providing rapid smoke extraction, cooling and improved control of the resulting smoke in the event of a fire, the safe evacuation of occupants is made much easier. Emergency control of any situation that develops is made possible for the fire services by ensuring that the extraction system is independent of external conditions.

A library to change the world

The futuristic building, designed by Francine Houben of architects Mecanoo, was recently opened by Malala Yousafzai – the teenager from Pakistan who championed women’s rights and survived a Taliban assassination attempt. On officially declaring the new library open and unveiling a commemorative plaque, she said: “Let us not forget that even one book, one pen, one teacher can change the world.”

The construction programme took over five years and, now open to the public, the library is forecast to attract some three million visitors a year.

Elta is part of the £90 million Elta Group, a family of businesses with operations in six countries on four continents which, together with a network of international distributors, provides quality fans and related air movement equipment to customers worldwide.

Quick Change for Elta at Alexander McQueen https://eltauk.com/blog/quick-change-for-elta-at-alexander-mcqueen/ https://eltauk.com/blog/quick-change-for-elta-at-alexander-mcqueen/#respond Tue, 29 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/quick-change-for-elta-fans-at-alexander-mcqueen/ Ten units from UK fan manufacturer Elta have featured in the recent refurbishment of the latest London retail outlet for McQ, the high end contemporary brand from the luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen.

London architectural practice Pod was employed to re-design the interior layout of number 14 Dover Street, a five-storey Georgian townhouse in the heart of Mayfair. Building tenant, McQ, part of the internationally renowned Alexander McQueen brand, wanted the building interior – which consisted of ground-level retail space and four office floors – transformed from the original, narrow, intricate and mazelike layout into a single, open series of connected retail space across all five floors. The Elta units were intended to provide emergency smoke extraction and pressurisation of the lift shafts and stairwells for the newly refurbished layout.

The order, for the two long-cased SmokeVent Axial 1250mm fans and eight long-cased Axial 500mm fans from Elta secured through distributor SK Sales of Thanet, was initially placed as single units. But a last minute change of plan saw the fans to be used as ‘Run & Standby’ pairs in ‘Series Set’. This meant that the two units intended to provide pressurisation within the lift shafts, had to be changed to 560mm fans bolted together and supplied with larger motors. The remaining six original 500mm units, which were for the pressurisation of the stairwells, simply required the necessary change of blade angle carried out at Elta’s Kingswinford factory, to enable them to be bolted together for use in tandem within the required set-up.

M&E sub-contractor for the prestigious project was HSE Building Services based in London Bridge. The main consultant was London based firm Kehr & Tucker who specified the use of Elta’s units from the outset. Elta’s long-cased SmokeVent fans are of robust, heavy duty construction to offer strength and durability. Unit casings are heavy-gauge, sheet steel, roll-formed, welded and hot dip galvanised.

The range has been specifically developed for emergency smoke extraction as part of the main extraction system or as dedicated units for the emergency clearance of smoke or fumes. The adjustable pitch, aerofoil section impellers have blades made from high quality, die cast aluminum.

The all metal, long-cased 500mm Elta Axial fan is also of a very durable and robust construction. The casings are constructed from a heavy gauge, mild sheet steel, rolled, spun flanged and fully welded, then hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:2009 after fabrication. Motors and adjustable pitch, axial impellers are both mounted within the length of the casing – the impellers being factory set to meet specific customer requirements and supplied with blades made from high quality cast aluminum, GRP or carbon-loaded composite.

Elta Units Fitted to Trio of New Build Tesco Stores https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-units-fitted-to-trio-of-new-build-tesco-stores/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-units-fitted-to-trio-of-new-build-tesco-stores/#respond Mon, 26 Mar 2012 23:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/elta-fans-units-fitted-to-trio-of-new-build-tesco-stores/ As work for the major UK supermarket chains is increasing for Midlands manufacturer, Elta, a further three Tesco stores have been fitted with units supplied by the Kingswinford-based fan manufacturer. Throughout 2011, Tesco has been building new stores at various locations, including Dudley, Crewe and Bedworth.

The new multi-million pound Tesco Extra concept store on Town Gate Retail Park, Burnt Tree in the Midlands’ town of Dudley was fitted with two SLC Long Cased axial fans, two LC non-select axial fans, four SCP Compact Plate fans, one SJ Jetflow and one SB CON Biflow fan. The units were installed by mechanical and electrical contractor, Neville Tucker Heating Limited, of Hull and supplied by Elta distributor, Lindab Lincoln, the biggest distributor of fans and air movement products in Britain.

SLC is Elta’s range of robust, long-cased axial fans, fitted with adjustable-pitch, aerofoil-section bladed impellers. They offer good performance combined with strength, durability and corrosion resistance. Compact SCP is a slim-profile, plate-mounted, axial fan. These weatherproof units have lightweight, robust and reliable motors promising long life, trouble-free operation, all around performance and simple speed control. Jetflow SJ all-metal, in-line centrifugal fans are designed to provide high performance in mediumpressure systems and are suitable for extract or supply in a range of residential, commercial and industrial applications. Biflow is the direct-drive, bifurcated axial fan specially developed by Elta for handling hostile air conditions.

At 100,000ft2, the new Dudley store has more than doubled the size of the previous one. In addition to the usual range of foods and household goods, the first floor boasts: a healthcare service including a specialist sports nutrition section; an interactive technology zone and a hair and beauty salon. Other facilities include a cafÌÄå©, clothing department, dry cleaners, Tesco Direct and an opticians. The first of its kind in the UK, the new store also houses a Domino’s Pizza takeaway – allowing customers to pick up ‘ready to go’ pizzas or order ahead online or via telephone, iPhone, iPad or Android apps.

In the heart of Bedworth, Warwickshire, the new Tesco store – rebuilt on the same Leicester Street site as the existing one – was fitted with four SQS Quietflow Single fans, two SCH Heritage roof fans and two LC non-select, long-cased axial fans. The project, which lasted twelve months, was developed in partnership with Discovery Properties, constructed by Bowmer & Kirkland and comprises a 65,000ft2 store with 518 parking spaces. It retained 340 existing jobs and created 150 new jobs. A follow-up order for the Bedworth store added five SSF Skyflow roof fans and three SMF Miniflow fans to the total of Elta units used.

Quietflow SQS is Elta’s acoustically treated, compact centrifugal unit, manufactured in galvanised steel and designed for internal mounting to overcome space restrictions in buildings with low ceiling voids. Operating quietly, they can be used whenever occupants are likely to come within close proximity. Heritage SCH is the range of vertical discharge centrifugal fans for use in commercial kitchen exhaust systems and similar applications requiring speed-control and an all-metal construction. The fans, which have galvanized steel cowls and aerodynamically designed, backward-curved, centrifugal impellers, can be fitted at angles up to 30Ìâå¡ even directly to pitched roofs/ceilings. Skyflow SSF is the lightweight horizontal-discharge, roof-extract unit with the low-profile design. It is UV-stabilised for durability, offering good performance and low-noise characteristics. The Miniflow SMF range is an axial powered roof extract unit specifically developed to meet the airflow requirements of small to medium-sized applications.

The mechanical and electrical building services for the Bedworth project were provided by George Birchall, a company which has worked for Tesco for more than 20 years. Not surprisingly, Birchalls were called upon to undertake the same services for the new Crewe store as well. The store in Crewe, with access from the roundabout on Vernon Way and Lyon Way, is also on two levels and now covers 5,500m2. It is double the size of the old supermarket and has provided the area with seventy extra jobs. There are 493 parking spaces at ground level, including twenty one disabled and seventeen parent and child spaces with thirty two cycle parking spaces under the sales area, located on the first floor. The list of Elta units supplied and fitted, again included SQS (Quietflow Single), SCH (Heritage) and SLC (Long Cased) axial fans.

Elta is part of the £85 million Elta Group, a family of businesses with operations in six countries on four continents which, together with a network of international distributors, provides quality fans and related air movement equipment to customers worldwide.

Elta Secures Sale of Eleven Units for Radical New Prison https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-secures-sale-of-eleven-units-for-radical-new-prison/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-secures-sale-of-eleven-units-for-radical-new-prison/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/elta-fans-secures-sale-of-eleven-units-for-radical-new-prison/ Eleven SmokeVent units have been supplied by Elta for the first completely new prison to be built and operated by the Scottish Prison Service in decades. HMP Low Moss is located on the outskirts of Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire near Glasgow and replaces the former prison of the same name, which closed in July 2007.

The SmokeVent SLCS range comprises several robust, heavy-duty models with adjustable-pitch, aerofoilsection impeller blades made from high-quality, die-cast aluminum. The high efficiency impellers make Elta’s SmokeVent SLCS range, a very economical means of moving high volumes of air at low-to-medium pressures. Although specifically developed as dedicated fans for emergency smoke spill extract systems for emergency clearance of hazardous fume conditions with better cooling and smoke control, the units can operate in normal extract mode as part of a main extract system. This means a single fan can provide both general and smoke extract requirements.

In May 2009, the Scottish Prison Service selected Carillion Construction Limited as the main contractor of the new publicly built and funded prison. Construction work began in February 2010 after the demolition of the former prison and is due for completion in early 2012. It will double the capacity of the original prison, which comprised a wooden, single-storey, prefabricated building and eleven Nissen-hut, dormitory-style units linked by internal corridors, originally serving as a barrage balloon depot.

Carillion awarded the contract to provide mechanical, electrical and public health installations within two house block buildings with a total of 700 cells to Vaughan Engineering Group Limited. Elta’s Scottish distributor, Ventilation & Heating Sales (VHS) of Broxburn in Edinburgh, supplied the units from Elta in two phases.

The new Low Moss facility represents a radical change in contemporary custodial design, setting the standard for three further prisons to be built under the Scottish Government’s prison modernization programme.

Elta Supply Ventilation Fans for the A3 Hindhead Tunnel https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-supply-ventilation-fans-for-the-a3-hindhead-tunnel/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-supply-ventilation-fans-for-the-a3-hindhead-tunnel/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2011 23:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/elta-fans-supply-ventilation-fans-for-the-a3-hindhead-tunnel/ Elta have supplied specialist fans for the road tunnel being built as part of a new bypass for the A3 in Surrey. The trunk road is the major highway between London and Portsmouth on England’s south coast, previously climbing around the side of the Devil’s Punch Bowl, the large natural amphitheatre, landmark and beauty spot near the village of Hindhead.

It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and designated part of a Special Protection Area. The new tunnel, which is a total of 1.2 miles long, is the longest non-estuarial tunnel in the United Kingdom. The maximum depth below ground, measured to the top of the tunnel, is about 200ft.

A full technical submittal on Elta Building Services Division proposals was required by ventilation contractors, James Paget Services, along with a formal letter of life expectancy for the units. Orders for the specially manufactured units, were then placed in April and May 2010. The first part of the order comprised two sets of long-cased, axial ‘run & standby’ fans with matching stainless steel ancillaries for ventilation of the void in the low-point sump.

After Elta sought confirmation from the motor supplier that it was possible to do so, each fan is set to work for 12 hours then switch to standby mode. They then operate in the opposite direction, switching again after each 24-hour period. “Windmilling” losses for standby fans, along with the control logistics of forward/reverse operation were decisive factors in the model selection process.

The second part of the order was for four bifurcated, cylindrically cased ATEX axial fans with matching ancillaries. Manufactured by the Fareham based Applied Technology Division of Elta these were designed to meet specific site requirements when supplying air and extracting gases from the drainage impounding sump. The bifurcated fans are quality, direct motor driven units, specially developed for handling hostile conditions of hot, dust-laden air, corrosive fumes or gases. The units are designed so that the gases by-pass the motor in order to eliminate any detrimental effects.

Two temperature options are available in either a cylindrical or conical casing. Elta manufactures a range of fans to meet the European Union (EU) directive ATEX (ATmosphÌÄå¬res EXplosibles) which coordinates various technical and legal conditions throughout Europe. This new and evolving standard ensures safety of equipment installed and operated in potentially dangerous atmospheres by reducing the explosion risk through established design methods.

The new, twin-bored road tunnel is an important part of the £371 million Hindhead project, one of the major schemes in the current Government’s programme of road works. The tunnel is part of the 4 milelong dual-carriageway currently under construction to replace the last remaining stretch of singlecarriageway. It will complete the 68 mile link between Portsmouth and the capital, removing a major source of congestion on a busy route (which carries over 28,000 vehicles per day) and improving road safety as well as air quality in the area. Work on the main tunneling works started in February 2008.

The tunnel features cross-passages every 100 metres along with state-of-the-art safety and communications systems. Secretary of State for Transport, Mr. Philip Hammond opened the Southbound bore to traffic on Wednesday, 27th July 2011, the first vehicles being escorted through the tunnel in convoy. Northbound traffic was introduced to the new road a few days later. It was opened within budget and on schedule.

Elta & IMCO Partnership for Turkey’s Newest Stadium https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-imco-partnership-for-turkeys-newest-stadium/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-imco-partnership-for-turkeys-newest-stadium/#respond Tue, 29 Mar 2011 23:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/elta-fans-imco-partnership-for-turkeys-newest-stadium/ The joint expertise of Elta and Istanbul based IMCO has recently been highlighted in a project to provide ventilation systems for the car parks of Turkey’s newest multi-purpose stadium.

The Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul has replaced the 45-year-old Ali Sami Yen Stadium as the new home to the Galatasaray Spor KulÌ (Galatasaray Sports Club), one of Turkey’s most famous football clubs and the holders of the record for the highest number of Turkish cups and joint record holders for the Turkish league. With a capacity of almost 53,000, the stadium has a parking area which can accommodate 3,225 vehicles: 3,025 in a closed area and a further 200 in an adjacent open area.

IMCO has successfully completed some 15 different car park projects across Turkey (totalling over 600,000 square metres) and has built an excellent reputation for understanding the particular ventilation requirements of what can prove challenging applications. In each project they have employed Impulse and/or Induction fans specifically developed by Elta for car park ventilation.

Dual ventilation in fully enclosed car parks is important as in the event of a fire, it is vital that a method of effectively removing the smoke is in place, not only to help ensure a safe evacuation process – particularly important with the numbers involved at a stadium – but also to allow the fire and rescue services to gain safe access in order to tackle the fire. For this reason the use of impulse fans in enclosed car parks is being increasingly employed throughout Europe. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is often used within car park applications to predict the behaviour of smoke in the event of a fire. At the Turk Telekom Arena, Elta worked with IMCO and an independent UK based CFD company to conduct a detailed study, focusing on smoke extraction from a long opening to the car park of approximately 100 metres.

This study ensured that the location and orientation of the fans was optimised to counter environmental factors such as wind direction and velocity based on data obtained from the local meteorological authorities. Another feature which had to be considered was the fact that the car park runs around the perimeter of the pitch, requiring the introduction of measures to prevent the spread of smoke if spectators were required to evacuate from any point within the stadium or car park in the event of an emergency.

A total of 180 fans from Elta – a mix of JetVent centrifugal induction, JetVent Impulse Ventilation and SmokeVent emergency ventilation – were installed to protect the Turk Telekom Arena car park, along with electric switch gears, control panels and extract motorised dampers sourced locally by IMCO.

Funded by public resources, the Turk Telekom Arena was built at a cost of $600 million. It officially opened on 15 January 2011 with a crowd of 40,000 at a spectacular opening ceremony followed by a friendly match between home team Galatasaray SK of the Turkish Spor Toto Super Lig and Dutch club AFC Ajax.

Elta Provide Healthy Collaboration on Largest Ever NHS Project in Scotland https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-provide-healthy-collaboration-on-largest-ever-nhs-project-in-scotland/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-provide-healthy-collaboration-on-largest-ever-nhs-project-in-scotland/#respond Thu, 10 Feb 2011 00:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/elta-fans-provide-healthy-collaboration-on-largest-ever-nhs-project-in-scotland/ Kingswinford-based manufacturer, Elta has supplied fans and equipment to the largest NHS construction project ever undertaken in Scotland. A new acute hospital for NHS Forth Valley, is currently under construction in Larbert, a small town 5 miles (4.0 km) northwest of Falkirk, the main town in the Forth Valley area.

Acute hospitals provide a diverse range of specialist care and treatment for patients. Typically, services include: consultation with specialist clinicians; emergency treatment; routine, complex and life saving surgery; specialist diagnostic procedures; observation and short-term care of patients with worrying symptoms. The first phase of the Forth Valley Royal Hospital is now complete and the hospital opened its doors to patients in August 2010.

The new-build, £300m facility will be one of the most modern and well equipped hospitals in Europe. Equipment supplied by Elta was mostly from the SELECT range, one of the widest available directly from stock. It included two Powerduct SPD fans, a Multiflow SMB, six SmokeVent LCS fans, a Quietflow Twin, two JetFlow fans, along with twenty special centrifugal fans sourced from Fans & Spares Limited Glasgow.

The Powerduct SPD range of robust, duct-mounted, square-cased, in-line centrifugal fans is designed to deliver high performance with low noise characteristics. Multiflow SMB is Elta’s range of square-cased, mixed-flow fans with adjustable-pitch, mixed-flow impellers, for use within ductwork. SmokeVent is for general ventilation plus emergency smoke extract and Quietflow SQT is the acoustically treated, in-line, centrifugal twin-fan range, intended for internal mounting in buildings with low ceiling voids, where fans are close to building occupants. Jetflow is one of the most extensive ranges of all metal in-line centrifugal fans and, again, provides high performance in either extract or supply applications.

As Elta only make metal fans, Elta’s Stuart Johnstone approached Alan Burns at Fans & Spares Limited, another national ventilation distributor and part of the Systemair group since 2004 with a request for an unusual collaboration. The Glasgow office, headed by Mr. Adrian Park, was more than happy to supply the twenty, 315mm plastic, in-line, duct fans that were needed to complete the order for the Forth Valley hospital. Mr. David Renwick of the project’s services providers, Crown House Technologies, one of the UK’s principal building services providers and a leading prefabricator of modular services, said: ‘We have a very good relationship with Elta. As well as supplying their equipment and sourcing the twenty, plastic, in-line, duct fans for the project, they also agreed to Fans & Spares Limited being the single point of contact close to site in Glasgow, liaising with them closely in order to simplify the purchasing process for us. Both suppliers also responded very quickly whenever site visits were required to assist us during installation.’

The NHS Forth Valley area has a population of nearly 280,000 and covers a geographic area from Killin and Tyndrum in the North and Strathblane and Bo’ness in the South, incorporating a mixture of rural and urban areas. Forth Valley Royal will include a mental health facility and a women & children’s unit. It will have 860 inpatient and day beds, sixteen operating theatres, twenty-five wards and 4,000 rooms. It will cover an area the size of nine football pitches and will eventually feature the UK’s first robotic supply and delivery system, Scotland’s first fully robotic pharmacy system and high-tech kitchens. The new hospital will replace Falkirk, and, Stirling Infirmaries and services will transfer across in a number of stages over the next year starting with services from Falkirk and District Royal in August 2010. The Minor Injuries Unit in Falkirk and the A&E Department in Stirling will continue to operate as normal until July 2011 when these services will move across as part of the final phase.

The new hospital is set in stunning surroundings in a largely parkland setting with mature woodland, ponds, landscaped courtyards and a visitor garden. It offers spectacular views across the Forth Bridges, the Lomond Hills and the Ochils.

Elta is part of the £85 million Elta Group, a family of businesses with operations in six countries on four continents which, together with a network of international distributors, provides quality fans and related air movement equipment to customers worldwide.

Elta Reach for the Skyes in Dubai Tower Projects https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-reach-for-the-skyes-in-dubai-tower-projects/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-reach-for-the-skyes-in-dubai-tower-projects/#respond Sat, 24 Jul 2010 13:27:32 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/?p=2162 Fans manufactured by the Building Services Export Division of Elta at both their Fareham and Kingswinford production facilities are being used in a series of prestigious towers being constructed as part of the on-going building development work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A total of five different Mechanical Services consultants have specified various Elta products for use in the schemes which are spread over eight projects by different developers.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers, which forms an integral suburb of new Dubai, is a dynamic, 730,000 square metre mixed-use development waterfront community in Dubai, consisting of a total of seventy nine towers built in blocks of three to form 23 clusters along the edges of four man-made lakes and interlinked by winding manmade waterways with beautifully landscaped gardens. From an architectural viewpoint, the distinctiveness of each tower design will provide an individualistic appeal to this community.

Elta’s products specified throughout many of these skyscraper towers include: the SmokeVent LCS range (for emergency smoke clearance), the JetVent Car Park Ventilation range and specifically the Axial Flow variants (a range of fans utilised to improve the air quality within the car park during normal day-to-day operation and emergency smoke clearance in the event of a car park fire). The Long Case LC Axial range, the Compact SCP (a slim profile, plate-mounted axial fan), the Multiflow MFB and Multiflow SMC mixed flow fans, the Jetflow SJ (a range of all metal in-line centrifugal fans), the SA range constructed from shock proof, heat resistant plastic; the Hideaway SH, Powerduct SPD and Twinflow STDD (ranges of direct in-line centrifugal fans for duct mounting), the Quietflow SQS and Quietflow SQT (acoustically treated, single in-line fans) and the Skyflow SSF (a lightweight range of horizontal discharge roof extract units).

As part of the contracts where JetVent Car Park Ventilation product are being supplied, Kinetics Ventilation Equipment L.L.C., in association with their partners in the UK, are providing the necessary design and system validation by means of complex computational fluid dynamic analysis.

Every tower within the development is individually constructed by separate developers and range in height from 35 to 45 floors, except for the majestic landmark \’Al Mas\’ (Arabic for \”the Diamond\”) Tower which, at 363 metres and with 67 floors, is the centre-piece and focal point of the entire complex. This tower is situated on its own island in the centre of the community and houses the Dubai Diamond Exchange and Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) member businesses dealing in the gold, diamond, energy and commodities industries.

The towers follow the high rise living concept adopted by Dubai as a means of promoting security and camaraderie, with the mixed use approach combining residential, offices, hotels, leisure and retail outlets to foster a feeling of community spirit. The towers will feature gymnasia, saunas, swimming pools and high speed lifts, and all will include state-of-the-art security measures. The finished project is estimated eventually to have a resident population of around 60,000 and a working population of another 120,000.

David Osgerby, Managing Director of Elta, said: “We are very well represented in the United Arab Emirates by our distributor, Kinetics Ventilation Equipment L.L.C., and to be involved in such a large, prestigious project is most gratifying, especially when our products have been specified in eight very impressive towers by five world renowned Mechanical Services consultants. The value of the fan contracts awarded is in excess of a quarter of a million pounds.\”

Elta are continuing to work closely with Kinetics Ventilation Equipment L.L.C. on a number of prestigious on-going projects in the Emirates.

Elta is part of the £85 million Elta Group, a family of businesses with operations in six countries on four continents which, together with a network of international distributors, provides quality fans and related air movement equipment to customers worldwide.

Elta Find that Every Little Helps in Superstore Car Park https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-find-that-every-little-helps-in-superstore-car-park/ https://eltauk.com/blog/elta-find-that-every-little-helps-in-superstore-car-park/#respond Thu, 12 Nov 2009 00:00:00 +0000 https://eltaecodev.wpengine.com/blog/elta-fans-find-that-every-little-helps-in-superstore-car-park/ The expertise of Elta in car park ventilation applications has been demonstrated by a project for a Tesco superstore in Dundee.

The 8,000 square metre 24 hour Tesco Extra on South Road was the latest in a number of Tesco retail projects with which Elta has been involved. The Dundee site features a car park at ground level, with capacity to the west of the store and the majority of spaces available in an undercroft car park beneath the store itself which is raised to first floor level. Because the undercroft is enclosed, smoke control specialist Advanced Smoke Technology (AST) worked in conjunction with M & E Contractor Neville Tucker to develop a design for the ventilation system which would overcome a number of potential issues relating to the changing structure of the car park.

The solution was AST’s Impulse Ventilation System which features 23 JetVent Axial impulse units and three large Long Cased SmokeVent units, all from Elta, not only to provide efficient day to day ventilation, but also to ensure effective smoke ventilation in the event of a fire. The 1,400mm diameter SmokeVent fans constantly regulate the airflow rate through the car park while the impulse fans control the airflow direction. The system also features a carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring system and a multi-criteria fire detection system, all linked to a main control panel. The signals provided by the CO monitors and the multi-criteria fire detectors are routed to the AST master control panel which adjusts the speed of the fans depending on the prevailing environmental conditions within the car park.

If a pre-determined level of CO pollution is reached or in the event of a fire, the zone based system is able to send a signal to automatically activate the impulse fans within the affected zone and to switch the SmokeVent fans to maximum capacity.

By controlling the fans and varying the rate of ventilation to meet the demand, the system only operates at full load during peak times, thereby providing significant energy savings and reducing operating costs.

Elta’s Jetvent fans are supplied in red as standard but at the special request of the customer, were finished by Elta in a white powder coating to the RAL specified by Tesco Stores.

Geoff Hardaker of Advanced Smoke Technology said “We undertook a smoke test to demonstrate the airflows in the car park of the Dundee store as part of the commissioning process and Tesco were extremely impressed with the results.”

AST’s smoke control specialists worked with Tesco’s own building engineers from the outset of the project, with AST drawing on Elta’s experience in fan technology to ensure the fans specified were ideally suited to the specific requirements of the Dundee site.
